PICS is celebrating after winning a top award at the Nottinghamshire Live Business Awards on Thursday 14 October during an annual celebration showcasing the achievements of the region’s business community. The glittering event took place at the University of Nottingham’s East Midlands Conference Centre and was attended by hundreds of sponsors and finalists. Winning Employer of the Year recognises PICS as one of the region’s top employers and best places to work.

Dr Kelvin Lim and Alison Rounce set up Primary Integrated Community Services Ltd (PICS) to deliver respiratory services for their patients. Since 2013, PICS has grown to nearly 400 staff who provide a variety of community and out of hospital services across Nottinghamshire and support six GP surgeries and 11 primary care networks.

To win, PICS demonstrated strong investment in employees, an attractive reward scheme and other key employee benefits. The judges highlighted how PICS cares for staff wellbeing and regards the safety and security of staff of the utmost importance.

The nomination demonstrated how staff worked throughout lockdown to deliver services under the most challenging circumstances. The PICS can do approach impressed, with examples of going door to door to find and care for the most vulnerable people in our communities. Our partnership with the healthcare system to deliver the vaccination programme was showcased alongside evidence of PICS’ commitment and support for the safety and wellbeing of colleagues. All this within the context of increasing in size as PICS recruited support for GPs, helping to reduce waiting lists and take pressure off the rest of the health and social care system.

George Goward of George Square Financial Management, judge and sponsor of the award explained why PICS won:

“PICS were the clear winner from the passion of the senior management team and how they have maintained such a friendly and supportive environment for their staff during a pandemic. There seems to be a genuine caring ethos throughout the organisation both for each other and patients and therefore I was very proud to announce PICS as the Employer of the Year.”

Excellence in Innovation

PICS were also congratulated for being ‘Excellence in Innovation’ finalists, recognising the strides PICS has made in creating new services. This category acknowledges the value of the company to the local economy, the robust commitment to quality and a can-do company culture. Speaking on behalf of judging panel, Mark Rutherford, Partner for Gateley Legal said:

“PICS (is) genuinely innovative in how primary care services are delivered. My colleagues could see a differential on how primary care services are otherwise provided and it was clear that the PICS model offered significant benefits to patients. We also really liked the enthusiasm of the stakeholders.”

A year of recognition

Over the past year, PICS has been awarded and accredited for staff engagement, patient safety and excellent services at both national and regional levels. PICS was named ‘one of best large companies to work for in UK and in the top ten of the best Health and Social Care companies to work for in the UK by Best Companies. PICS won the Health Service Journal Value Awards in the Primary Care or Community Service Redesign Initiative category for the Acute Home Visiting Service: and were also finalists in the HSJ Patient Safety Awards with our partnership service in the ‘End of life’ category.

Directors dedicate the award to all health and social care workers

Delighted to accept the award, Dr Kelvin Lim, Medical Director and Ali Rounce, Managing Director, dedicated the award to all staff in health and social care saying:

Highlighting PICS’ commitment to collaborative, clinically-led services, two special guests of PICS at the event were Dr Greg Hobbs, Consultant in Pain Medicine, and Dr Srinivas Amirchetty, Gynaecology Consultant from Nottinghamshire University Hospitals Trust. Dr Hobbs congratulated PICS staff, saying:

“I’m extremely proud to see PICS win. The exceptional leadership team together with all PICS colleagues have created a unique work culture that continues to flourish in challenging times. A really great place to work in healthcare.”

During the ceremony, a film was played to explain what PICS does and the stars of the show were the staff at Hama Medical Centre in Eastwood, a PICS-run GP Pratice. The team were filmed going about their busy day, demonstrating how GP Practices are open, supporting patients and working hard.
