In June 2023, we were delighted to receive the Employer Recognition Scheme Silver Award in recognition of our ‘exceptional’ support as an employer of veterans and family members of serving personnel. The Ministry of Defence’s Employer Recognition Scheme acknowledges employers who have gone above and beyond their Armed Forces covenant pledges.

Emma Alder, PICS lead for the Armed Forces Covenant said:

“At PICS, we truly value the diverse skills members of the armed forces community bring to our organisation and we proudly offer our ongoing support to them. Congratulations to everyone who has been part of a tremendous effort in supporting members of our workforce from the armed forces community through best practice, HR, recruitment and many other initiatives.”

Read about the experiences of two ex-defence staff below, as Jo and Anna explain how they’ve been supported by PICS, and how this has helped them improve care for patients.

“From the first application, I felt PICS recognised the services of veterans with the guaranteed interview scheme. Since starting I have been able to share my story and past experiences to enhance my practice and patient care. Being identified as a veteran, I have been supported to become a Service Champion, for the Armed Forces Network, wearing my badge with pride. PICS have supported and encouraged my passion for improving local services for the Armed Forces Community, gaining Veteran Friendly GP practice recognition for a number of local practices, networking opportunities with local voluntary organisations, and the service community. I have also been asked to be a mentor to new starters at PICS, helping them settle and with signposting to services.”

Anna Parker, PICS Paramedic

“I’ve been a ‘veteran-friendly practice’ lead since November 2021, which was picked up on by my employer PICS shortly after. Since then I’ve been really well supported by PICS to develop my skills and confidence around this role, and the team who lead this initiative pro-actively include me in the work that they do. This has enabled me to strengthen the presence of veteran support within the practices I work amongst, and encourage practice teams to get involved too.”
